Judy Millar was raised in Kitchener, Ontario. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and French literature from Wilfrid Laurier University, and later studied public relations theory and practice at the University of Victoria. Following a career devoted to business writing—where, among other honours, she received an International Association of Business Communicators’ Award of Excellence—she and her husband relocated to Nanaimo, BC.
She then studied creative writing at Vancouver Island University. Awards for her creative and humour writing include a John Kenneth Galbraith Literary Award and a Kerry Schooley Memorial Award, a Toronto Sun essay award, and two-time finalist recognition in both the Mark Twain House Royal Nonesuch Humor Writing Contest (USA) and the Writers’ Union of Canada Short Prose Competition.
Judy has been published in The Globe and Mail, the Times Colonist, Reader’s Digest (Canada), Writer’s Digest (USA), and in anthologies such as Laugh Lines, Flash Nonfiction Funny and Sea & Cedar magazine.
Her latest book—Other Than That, I’m Fine: Essays on Life and Other Inconveniences—was released in late summer of 2024. She previously published Beaver Bluff, The Librarian Stories—a collection of humorous short stories for adults—and was also principal lyricist for over 90 songs published on ten award-winning children’s and new country albums.
Judy lives on beautiful Vancouver Island, where she’s been known to engage in comedic storytelling, clumsy kayaking and lively line dancing—but not all at once.
